Burrowing Owl

Athene cunicularia

This owl is distinguished from others of its family by its long legs and its preference for open country. It is found on the southern prairies, where it nests in small colonies or single pairs. If disturbed when in its burrow, this owl emits a rattling sound in imitation of a rattlesnake.
