Great Egret

Casmerodius albus

Similar in form to the great blue heron but distinguished by its black legs, white feathers and absence of a crest, this bird was hunted for its plumes to the point of a severe decrease in population. Great egret numbers have now recovered to a great extent, and some parts of its range are even expanding.
