Prairie falcon

Falco mexicanus

The prairie falcon is a crow-sized bird which is distinguishable from hawks via the toothed upper mandible. It is similar in appearance to the peregrine falcon but exhibits paler coloration. It is typical of dry open areas in western Canada. During the breeding season it can be found in close proximity to cliffs, canyons, and rock outcrops. Prairie falcons will nest atop bare rock or commandeer the nests of other birds. The female will lay approximately six eggs. Its breeding range runs through Southern British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. It remains to winter in the same location and does not undertake any true migration.
