American Redstart

Setophaga ruticilla

The female and young male of this species are gray and light yellow, while the mature male acquires a black body with orange wing and tail sections. These colourful patches are conspicuously displayed when the American redstart is perched, as it tends to fan its wings and tail when at rest. American redstarts make their living by catching insects in flight.
