Yellow-bellied Sapsucker

Sphyrapicus varius

Common throughout deciduous forests in south-central and north-western Canada, this most widely-distributed of sapsuckers makes a living by drilling holes in tree trunks. Sap flows out of these holes, attracting insects, and the yellow-bellied sapsucker feeds upon both.
