Greater Prairie-Chicken

Tympanuchus cupido

The greater prairie chicken is a medium sized grouse that has seen its numbers increase and then sharply decrease recently. It has become restricted to southern Alberta, southern Saskatchewan, southern Manitoba, and rarely in southern Ontario. It prefers grasslands that are reasonably open, and also inhabits man-made clearings. They make their nests in soil depressions, utilizing the materials available to them. The female lays eleven or twelve eggs during the breeding season.
