Marbled Murrelet

Brachyramphus marmoratus

The marbled murrelet is a small, plump-bodied seabird that swims with its bill pointed up in the air, and flies in zigzags low over the water. In Canada, it is found off the coasts of British Columbia and the Yukon Territory. The main limiting factor for marbled murrelet is the loss of habitat through the removal of old-growth forests. The clear-cut logging practices used in British Columbia are especially destructive of habitat. A recovery effort has been in place since 1993 to aid this threatened species.
