Blandings Turtle

Emydoidea blandingi

Found mostly in Kejimkujic National Park, Nova Scotia, Blanding's Turtle is a relatively large North American freshwater turtle. It can be found in a variety of habitats, including lakes, ponds, marshes, and creeks. The climate in Nova Scotia leads to short incubation and nest flooding, which is hampering the turtles success. Racoon predation of nest sites and park expansion activities are also limiting factors. In 1996, there were less than 200 adult Blanding's turtles in Canada. A recovery plan was approved in 1998 to realize a self-sustaining population in Nova Scotia.
