Wavy-rayed Lampmussel

Lampsilis fasciola

The wavy-rayed mussel inhabits clear rivers and streams with steady water flow, typically buried in gravel or sand in and around riffle areas up to 1m in depth. It is uncommon in Canada and is restricted to the upper Grand River and limited sections of the Thames, Sydenham, and possibly the Ausable rivers, all in Ontario. Agricultural activity continues to threaten this species with run-off pollutants such as pesticides and fertilizers. Muskrats also feed on mussels and seem to prefer the wavy-rayed lampmussel over other species.
