Margined Madtom

Noturus insignis

The margined madtom is a small fish found in only a few streams in eastern Ontario and western Quebec. It is very difficult to estimate populations since the fish are active at night and hide during the day. The size of the Canadian population of the margined madtom cannot be estimated because of insufficient data, but the population is believed to be very small. Loss of habitat due to the construction of beaver dams may be an important limiting factor, since their habitat requirements are very specific. Spawning success is another factor for this unprotected species.
