Lake Utopia Dwarf Smelt

Osmerus sp.

Named after the lake in New Brunswick in which they originally occurred, the Lake Utopia dwarf smelt have also been introduced into Meech Lake, in Quebec. The availability of spawning habitat as well as changes in the ecology of the two streams used could lead the species to extinction. Severe lake pollution would also be a detrimental factor. The Lake Utopia dwarf smelt is not specifically protected by law, although there is a limit placed on fishing catches and the two spawning streams are relatively difficult to access.
