Western Prairie Fringed Orchid

Platanther praeclara

The western prairie white fringed orchid is a single-stemmed perennial that blooms in July. Its Canadian distribution is limited to a tiny area of Manitoba, although it is thought to have been common in the province until the decline of tall-grass prairies. These prairies have increasingly been turned into agricultural land, resulting in the inevitable destruction of the prairie ecosystem, including the western prairie white fringed orchid and its pollinators.
