Barn Owl (Eastern population)

Tyto alba

The barn owl is found from extreme southern Canada to southern South America and the West Indies. Its numbers in Ontario and Quebec were probably never very large, although the species possibly inhabited oak-savannah vegetation adjacent to tall grass prairie prior to European settlement. The main factor limiting the barn owl is the loss of habitat and of prey species, mainly to urbanization.
