Canada's Species   Species at risk

Deerberry

Vaccinium stamineum

The deerberry is a low, slender shrub with flower clusters and spreading branches. In Canada it occurs in southern Ontario, in dry, open woods. This species is associated with burned sites, where fires have cleared competeing vegetation and opened the canopy for the plant to prosper. As a result, when natural disturbances are supressed, the plant is threatened by competing species, although trampling and climate changes have also been limiting factors.
