Canada's Species   Species at risk

Yellow Montane Violet

Viola praemorsa praemorsa

In Canada, the yellow montane violet is found on the east coast of Vancouver Island and on Saltspring Island. It is a perennial that is not tolerant of shade. Habitat destruction is the most direct and immediate threat to several populations of this species as well as competition from introduced species that shade out and eliminate native plants. Fire suppression contributes to the species' demise, by enabling aggressive native and non-native species to expand to the detriment of the yellow montane violet.
