Canada's Species   Fish

Copper redhorse

Moxostoma hubbsi

While there are many species of sucker found in Quebec, the copper redhorse is Quebec's only indigenous fish species. Unfortunately, it is also one of Quebec's endangered fish species. Its range is limited to certain portions of the St. Lawrence river drainage system: Lac St. Louis, Lac des Deux-Montagnes, Lac St. Pierre, the Ottawa River, the Richelieu River, and the Yamaska River system. Nowhere within its range is it considered abundant. In addition, these watersheds are heavily impacted by industrial and domestic pollution. The future of this fish is highly uncertain.
