Short-horned Lizard

Phrynosoma douglassi

The only iguanid native to Canada, the little short-horned lizard is characterized by a flat, wide body covered in spines. These spines, coupled with the colour pattern of the body, make the lizard particularly difficult to find, even in bare, sandy areas. They are insectivorous, eating mainly ants. While they are sometimes kept as pets, this is to be discouraged as they require a very specific environment to remain healthy.
