The tiny spring peeper, growing up to 36 mm long, enjoys a wide range from Prince Edward Island to Manitoba. Wooded or bushy areas in which the frog can climb are the prefered habitats, although it is less arboreal in its habits than the Gray Treefrogs. Their shrill peeping calls can be heard between late March and early July, although individuals will sometimes call later in the season. There is some variation in the colour between populations. They are typically brownish, sometimes with a reddish tint. Their belly is white, with dark flecks, and the groin area and the back of the hindlegs are yellow.
