Common Garter Snake

Thamnophis sirtalis

The most abundant and widespread snake in Canada, the common garter is also the most variable, with 5 subspecies. Its colour is generally brown or black, but can be grey or cinnamon, with various patterns of red, yellow, brown or orange stripes, bars or checkerboard patterns. It can reach lengths of up to 124 cm.
