Virginia Opossum

Didelphis virginiana

Although it is wide ranging in both South and North America, the Virginia opossum has a limited range in Canada. These opossums are generalists, inhabiting a wide variety of habitats. The Virginia opossum is one of the largest opossums, ranging from 30-50 centimetres in length. The Virginia opossum is well adapted for life on the ground but may inhabit woodlands since it is able to climb trees. It feeds on insects, fruits, and carrion.
