Ferruginous Hawk

Buteo regalis

The ferruginous hawk is a rare bird to behold in Canada; its breeding range is limited to the southern portions of Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. The ferruginous hawk is similar to the rough-legged hawk but can be distinguished by its much broader beak. It inhabits plains, prairies, and badlands, nesting in trees, where the female will lay three to five eggs. The nests, which are made of sticks, are often reused year after year.
