White-tailed Ptarmigan

Lagopus leucurus

The white-tailed ptarmigan is the smallest of all the Canadian ptarmigans. It sometimes mistaken for an arctic grouse but is actually native to the warmer Montane Cordillera. White-tailed ptarmigan prefer high altitudes, nesting on rocky meadows and slide-rock slopes. The nest consists of a depression which is filled in with grasses and other nest building materials. "
