These large birds lead a similar lifestyle to the common and yellow-billed loons. Grebes are aquatic birds, preferring to inhabit freshwater lakes in the summer and coastal salt water in the winter. They spend the winter months in the warmer climate of the west coast. During the breeding season the red-necked grebe can heard from a great distance as the males attempt to attract females with their cries. The red-necked grebe feeds on a variety of small crustaceans, salamanders, and fish.
