Red-shouldered Hawk

Buteo lineatus

This high-soaring hawk spends its summers in southern Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick, where it frequents mixed woodlands, especially near running water. These locations are appealing to the red-shouldered hawk because of its diet of frogs, snakes and crayfish. This hawk migrates the eastern US in winter, and is most easily spotted on its migration singly or in small groups.
