Northern Prairie Skink

Eumeces septentrionalis septentrionalis

Measuring 13 -20 cm, the northern prairie skink is a small, cigar-shaped lizard, found only in southwestern Manitoba. It inhabits sandy areas close to rivers or swamps, emerging from hibernation in late april/early may. Severe weather conditions may affect breeding and loss of habitat is an important limiting factor for the species.
