Eelgrass Limpet
Lottia alveus
The eelgrass limpet was a marine invertebrate which became extinct in 1929. It lived on the blades of north atlantic eelgrass near open coastal waters. The limpet's narrow habitat requirements and genetic variablity are thought to be the cause of its extinction, particulary combined with a loss of its sole food source in the 1930s. Two remaining subspecies of limpet can be found in low-salinity areas.
