Great Basin Spadefoot Toad

Spea intermontana

The breat basin spadefoot toad inhabits a variety of semi-arid to arid grasslands and open woodlands in British Columbia. It hibernates from October to April in burrows up to 1 meter deep. The toad feeds mainly on insects and earthworms, usually on humid nights. Predators include snakes and burrowing owls, but the threat to the toad's survival comes from increasing argriculture and housing developments which affect the availability of underground water reserves necessary for breeding ponds.
