Canada's Species   Fish

Northern pike

Esox lucius

The northern pike is one of Quebec's most well known and widely distributed fish. In fact, this species has a circumpolar distribution, with populations occurring in nearly all parts of Canada, the northern United States, nothern Europe, and Asia. Pike are found in lakes, resevoirs, and slow moving rivers, preferring weedy areas where they sit and wait for passing prey. The pike is infamous as a voracious predator of virtually anything that moves, including the toes of feet dangling in the water!
