Variable in colour, the wood frog can range from grey or brown to red with spots, and it has a distinctive dark "mask". Its belly is a mottled white. It has an exceptional range, occuring from coast to coast, and as far north as northernmost Yukon and Alaska, making it the most northernmost occuring amphibian or reptile in North America, penetrating even into the Arctic Circle. It occupies a wide variety of habitats, though damp woodlands, pond margins and marshes are prefered. Wood frogs call with a low, rapid quacking sound, vaguely similar to a duck.
