Plains Spadefoot
Scaphiopus bombifrons
Spadefoots get their name from a small horn-like projection under each hind foot which are used to burrow backwards into loose soil. This feature aids in distinguishing them from true toads which have two tubercules on each hind foot. Another feature characteristic of spadefoots which helps in identification is the vertical pupil in bright light, a feature which is, in Canada, shared only the tailed frog. They are usually inactive during dry periods, prefering to spend their time burrowed in the cool ground.
