Larvae live in the soil and feed on decaying organic matter and plant roots. The adults are important plant pollinators. Adults are most abundant in spring and early summer when they are often seen over fields and other open areas. Bibionidae are small to medium sized, usually hairy and blackish, and often with yellow or red marking. The antennae are short and arise below the eyes. They have long legs with large femora and large combs on the underside of the front tibia.
