Adults are common in moist shady places and the larvae are found in decaying vegetation. Many species are associated with forests, where the larvae feed on decaying leaves. Lauxaniidae are small and robust flies that are usually yellow, brown, grey or black and sometimes a combination of these. The wings are often clouded or spotted.
