Most species are found on the ground, especially in damp muddy places near water. They feed on small fragments of vegetation and microscopic algae. These grasshoppers have the pronotum extended backwards over the abdomen forming a long narrow projection. They are dull brown or gray. The wings are hidden under the pronotum but are absent in some species.
