Tettigoniids are mainly plant feeders, but a few prey on other insects. They are found in a variety of habitats and many live in trees. They are well-known for their courtship songs and each species has a characteristic song. These grasshoppers are normally green, with other species ranging from brown to pink. Most are fully winged, with the wings sometimes large and leaflike. Some species are wingless. The female ovipositor is stout and sword-like.
