This diminutive creature is actually one of the most prolific animals found in Canada. It can be found in just about every habitat type imaginable, enjoying a vast distribution throughout most of Canada. The deer mouse is named for its colouration, which may resemble that of a white-tailed deer. It can be easily identified by the bicoloured tail, with a sharp distinction between the light and dark bands. The deer mouse is primarily a seed eater but will also feed on a wide variety of grasses in the summer. Although harmless, these little mice have been a cause of great concern as of late. There have been documented cases of individuals who were bitten and subsequently contracted the deadly hanta virus; one should take care if handling a deer mouse.
