This impressive owl, which can grow to 56 centimetres, will prey upon species as large as skunks and grouse. It is found in a variety of habitats, including urban areas, boreal forest, and open desert. A form of the great horned owl which exhibits pale colouring can sometimes be found at the northernmost edges of its central Canadian range.
