Whooping Crane

Grus americana

The whooping crane is the tallest North American bird. Whooping cranes are omnivorous. They feed on insects, frogs, rodents, small birds, minnows, blue crabs and clams. Today there are 300 whooping cranes in the world. Total legal protection, public interest, protected breeding grounds in Canada and wintering grounds in the United States, along with artificial incubation, have all helped in rescuing the whooping crane from extinction.
