Canada's Species   Species at risk

Wolvrine

Gulo gulo

One of the larger species in the weasel family, the wolverine is in many ways a remarkable mammal. It is curious, bold, and strong, and will defend its food against an attack from a wolf or even a grizzly bear. The wolverine is a solitary nomad and feircely terriotorial, not tolerating another wolverine of the same sex on its home turf. It appears to have poor eyesight, sometimes shading its eye with a raised paw, but its sense of smell is acute. The wolverine is omnivorous, consuming roots and berries as well as mice, squirrels, and fish. The wolverine is a powerful adversary and besides occasionally falling prey to a pack of wolves, its main enemies are the trappers that it is constantly in competion with. It follows traplines and destroys the catch as well as the trappers' food caches, causing hunters and trappers to greatly reduce its numbers.
