Eskimo Curlew

Numenius borealis

The Eskimo curlew was once one of the most numerous birds in Canada. Its range was entirely located within the Mackenzie District of the Northwest Territories, but during migration it was found in all provinces except British Columbia. It was intensively hunted, being easy to catch. The Eskimo curlew has been protected in both Canada and the United States since 1917. Researchers have made no confirmed sightings of nests or young for well over 100 years.
