Great Plains Toad

Bufo cognatus

The great plains toad lives in the short-grass prairies of southern Alberta and Saskatchewan. During heavy rains in late spring and early summer, the toads congregate in sloughs, ditches, and flooded fileds, where they breed. The mating call has been likened to the sound of a pneumatic drill, and can be heard from 2km away. In Alberta, the great lains toad cannot be killed for any reason, cannot be bought or sold, and a permit is required for holding one in captivity for educational or scientific purposes.
