Canada's Species   Species at risk

Banded Killifish

Fundulus diaphanus

Banded killifish are found throughout southern Canada, from the Atlantic Ocean to the Red River of Manitoba. Their habitat requirements include quiet shallow waters in lakes or ponds with sand or gravel bottoms. They can live in both freshwater and salt water, but prefer freshwater. Limiting factors include the small number of available habitats and the barriers which restrict access to some of these habitats, colder water temperatures, and chemical contaminants such as pesticides and herbicides.
