Bluehearts

Buchnera americana

In Canada, bluehearts are a perennial flower confined to a 10 km stretch of Lake Huron shoreline in southwestern Ontario. They prefer moist sandy soils in open woods and prairies often occupying the edges of wet depressions between sand dunes. Major limiting factors for this species include their very specific habitat needs, regulation of water levels, and loss of habitat to cottage development. Currently there is no protection or recovery effort in place for bluehearts.
