Canada's Species   Species at risk

Goat's-rue

Tephrosia virginiana

This perennial herb is limited to southern Ontario. Goat's-rue grows in well-drained soil in open woods with direct sunlight. The species doesn't do well in shade, so the canopy-forming trees in the savanna forests are a problem for its survival. The Ontario Natural Heritage Information Centre rates the plant as critically imperiled because of its extreme rarity.
