Wood Turtle

Clemmys insculpta

The wood turtle's distribution is limited to northeastern North America. In Canada it occurs in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Quebec, and Ontario. It is omnivorous, feeding on berries, leaves, earthworms, and slugs. The wood turtle is terresstrial and occupies a variety of habitats including forests, but water edges, especially with moderate currents. Predation from raccoons, skunks, cats, dogs and humans is contributing to the species' decline.
